Trichobezoars which are commonly known as hairballs can cause great discomfort and health issues towards your cat. The cause of hairballs is well known, cats groom themselves and although most of the hair passes through the cats entire system some remains in the stomach collecting more hair creating a hairball. Hairballs are more common in long haired cats like Persians and Maine Coons. Kittens do not have as much tendency to have hairballs as do older cats since self grooming is regularly done once cats begin to grow older.
A great way to reduce shedding is to constantly brush and groom your cat. When a cat owner grooms their cat often the loose hairs which lay on the surface of your cat's fur coat are removed. This makes it less likely that the loose hairs will end up in your cat's stomach when they go to lick themselves clean. Another great way to prevent hairballs is to give your pet cat grass which is a great natural fiber which helps cats pass hair through their digestive system.
