Dog Allergies

Allergies in Dogs

There are many different types of allergies that could affect a dog. 10%-15% of canines suffer from a skin allergy while 40% of dogs suffer from flea allergies. The signs of allergies in dogs are very different from allergy symptoms in humans. An allergy is a hypersensitive reaction cause by an allergen(s). The age of onset is between one to three years but allergies can affect a dog at any age. At first allergies could surface during a certain time period but as the patient ages, the signs of allergies could worsen and last all year long rather than for a certain season.

Symptoms of allergies in dogs

Itchiness and Scratching in certain areas:

  • Face: Dogs would be rubbing the area around their face, including ears, eyes and muzzle.
  • Paws: Dogs often bite, chew, or lick their paw.
  • Groin/Underarms: They may chew, lick, bite, or scratch their groin/ underarms.

Respiratory symptoms include:

  • Sneezing
  • Wheezing
  • Coughing would rarely occur

If these symptoms are left untreated it could lead to bacterial and yeast infections. These infections are more severe and they become more complicated to treat.

Holistic Care Options

There would be a thorough physical examination of your dog and also an allergy test may be conducted to confirm the veterinarian’s diagnosis or to figure out what your dog might be allergic too. Antihistamines and corticosteroids could be prescribed to give your dog relief from intense itching. Another option available for allergies is called hypo sensitization which is also known as immunotherapy. The canine is given an injection of small but increasing doses of the allergen at varying intervals for up to 12 months. This will help the dog slowly become immune to their allergen.
